Purpose and Benefit: The purpose of this internship is to provide an atmosphere within a local church to train, equip, and affirm men for pastoral ministry. There are five potential benefits in a ministerial student considering this internship.
1. The benefit of a supportive and loving environment of a local church that assumes responsibility for the care, training, and education of the intern.
2. The receiving of practical understanding and training for the essential areas of pastoral ministry within the local church.
3. The gaining an official church position approved by the church that can go on a resume reflecting ministry experience.
4. The opportunity for a local congregation to possibly affirm an individual’s gifts and calling.
5. Exposure to a pastor’s daily schedule to help an individual evaluate the pastoral nature of their calling.
Program Length: Twelve weeks during the summer months from June through August.
Who will serve as interns? Men currently in the ministerial program of a likeminded Christian College or Seminary interviewed and approved by church leadership.
What will the interns do? The interns will serve in every area of ministry gaining experience and building leadership. The intern’s week includes mandatory attendance at staff meetings, theology discussion, various meetings that you will sit in on, all public services of the church, staff prayer times, intern discussions, weddings, wedding rehearsals, funerals, weekly service reviews, intern accountability and supervision times, and any spontaneous meetings or service opportunities that arise in the course of a week. Interns will spend a good amount of time each week with the pastoral leadership as well as other staff members learning study habits, philosophy of ministry, philosophy of preaching, church organization, philosophy of shepherding, building projects, church finance, ministry and the home, etc.
General Objectives - Sermon and worship service planning and preparation - Disciplined prayer life - Pastoral care: hospitals, visitation, member care, and membership interviews - Public worship service involvement and evaluation - Funerals and weddings (observing) - Leadership meetings (staff, deacons, trustees, etc.) - Essentials of administration - Additional books to read and discuss with pastor or another staff member (paid for by the church)

Previous Intern Testimony
What has been the greatest blessing to you personally from these months at FBC?
The greatest blessing to me has been the staff’s willingness to involve me in everything they could. I know that I am inexperienced and because of that people would have been justified in keeping me out of speaking, visiting, etc. I loved the opportunities given to me to stretch myself and help the church in any way I could. All of the staff were ready to give me work and I was blessed by that.

What has been the greatest ministry lesson/skill that you learned/sharpened that you will take with you to your next ministry?
I think a skill that I have gained would be the experience gained in planning and communication. All of my previous experience had been in a smaller church where communication only had to happen with two or three people. Observing the staff talk to each other, and the staff allowing me to input my opinion and viewpoint gave me insight into how to work in a larger staff situation.

What have you learned/been challenged in that you didn't expect?
I have been challenged in many areas and have learned a lot, but the thing that surprised me the most was the people in the church that came to talk to me about spiritual things. Different teens and adults both wanted my opinion on different struggles in their life and it really pushed me to spend time in prayer and meditation to find a way to address those issues. I wasn’t expecting anyone to speak to me like that because I’m just a guy who’s not even graduated yet, but I was glad for the opportunities to point people toward Jesus.

What would you like future interns of FBC to know? What advice/challenge would you give them?
Let yourself be challenged to do things you are uncomfortable with. Try and reach out to all the different types of ministry in the church. Let the opportunity of working in a larger staff push you towards being able to work with many people. Talk to everyone you can in the church. Don’t let yourself be held down to the one or two people who you are comfortable with, but be a blessing to whoever you can.
